Brazilian journalist shot for covering corruption

28 November 2012

In front of his own home, a former police officer and journalist was killed by unidentified assailants who escaped on a motorcycle Nov. 21, according to the International Press Institute.

Eduardo Carvalho, 51, was the owner of the online investigative website, UHNews (Última Hora). The site is known for its controversial coverage of local corruption and abuse of authority, IPI reported.

Carvalho said that he was receiving death threats weeks before his murder, according to the IPI story.

The journalist’s piece published Nov. 21 covered an anonymous local military police captain who used his authority to “intimidate” employees on strike. Those workers were employed by a cleaning company that provides services to the state.

Reporters Without Borders called for a swift investigation into Carvalho’s murder, which occurred just days before IFEX’s international campaign to end impunity that calls for justice for journalists’ killers.

“On International Day to End Impunity, we urge the authorities to investigate Carvalho’s murder as thoroughly and quickly as possible, especially as there are indications that it was linked to his journalistic work,” said Reporters Without Borders.
