Opposition editor freed from jail

Hang Chakra, editor of opposition daily Khmer Machas Srok, was freed from Prey Sar prison on April 13, where he was held 10 months on a charge of disinformation.

Chakra said that while he was in prison, his health problems worsened, according to Reporters Without Borders. He is currently undergoing medical tests.

Chakra was released from his sentence by a royal pardon given to mark the Khmer New Year. He said he would continue to edit the Khmer Machas Srok.

“It is incredible to be freed the day before the Khmer New Year, and I am really happy to be reunited with my family,” Chakra said in a statement to the press.
