Iranian-American journalist imprisonedPosted May 4 2009
Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment by the Tehran’s Revolutionary Courts on a charge of spying for the United States, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reports.
Saberi, 31, has been detained at the Evin prison in Tehran since late January. Only a single hearing took place during her trial that opened before a revolutionary court on April 13 and lasted a day. RSF reports that her lawyer, Abdolsamad Khoramshahi, confirmed that Saberi has been convicted and sentenced and that he was going to appeal.
Condemning the verdict, RSF said, “This conviction is unjust under the Iranian criminal code and the sentence is severe. RSF believes the verdict is a pre-election warning to all foreign journalists working in Iran.
